The maintenance of tanks and cargo holds of tankers, bulk carriers and container ships is still a difficult and labour-intensive task. Up to 4.000 square metres of walls, ceilings and floors in each tank or hold have to be cleaned, recoated and recoated manually. Therefore expensive scaffoldings or cherry pickers have to be built or brought in the tanks or holds, which leads to a bunch of disadvantages:
- the setup and dismantle procedures take a large amount of valuable lay days and workforce
- the scaffolding material is expensive and has to be cleaned in an extensive way
- bad working conditions due to insufficient lighting, exhaust gases etc.
- limited working areas due to the structure of scaffolding
